New Attractions Coming to Walt Disney World

It was Christmas in July for Disnerds last weekend at the company’s annual D23 Expo. The event usually delivers loads of news regarding what the imagineers are cooking up for the Disney theme parks, but this year our cup overflowed with exciting developments.

Tron Lightcycle Power Run

The skyline at the Magic Kingdom will be changing as they add a brand new rollercoaster to Tomorrowland! The Tron Lightcycle Power Run has been an exceedingly popular attraction at the Disney park in Shanghai, so it’s being imported to Orlando!

The ride simulates riding the Lightcycles – motorcycles made of light that leave a light trail as they zip by  – from the Disney film TRON: LEGACY. The film takes place in an alternate reality inside computers where the world is made of light. It’s a mesmerizing ride, which you can get a feel for in this video from the Shanghai park:

The attraction will be built slightly behind the iconic Space Mountain, and will not be replacing any existing attraction (woo hoo!). You should be able to start queuing up for your ride in 2021 for Magic Kingdom’s 50th anniversary!

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway

Taking the place of the aging Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, will be the first ride at Walt Disney World to star the company’s indelible mascot, Mickey Mouse!

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will take riders through the screen into a Mickey Mouse short film. The animated short begins with Mickey and Minnie getting ready for a picnic while Goofy tries his hand at being an engineer. Riders then literally step into the movie screen to board Goofy’s train. Mickey and Minnie will keep them out of trouble as riders are taken through many thrilling twists and turns.

But, with the addition of this exciting new attraction coming quickly you’ll have only a few more weeks to say your goodbyes to The Great Movie Ride, which will close its doors for good on August 13, 2017. There’s no set date for Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway to open.

Guardians of the Galaxy in Epcot

Something a bit further out on the horizon, but nonetheless exciting to hear about, is a Guardians of the Galaxy coaster, based on the hit Marvel movie, moving into the space in Epcot currently occupied by Universe of Energy.

Not a lot of details were revealed about this ride, but the fact that the front half of Epcot is getting some love from imagineers after going many years without any new attractions is welcome news. With this news comes word that the entire front entrance to the park will be revamped to give the park – which is themed around the idea of the future and advanced technology – to look less dated.

Ratatouille Ride in Epcot

The back half of Epcot will also receive a new attraction to join the recently opened Frozen Ever After ride in the Norway Pavilion. The France Pavilion will be rebuilt to feature the popular Ratatouille ride, based on the Pixar film, that has been insanely popular in Disneyland Paris.

You can get a brief taste of the ride in the following video:

But there’s more…

That wasn’t all of the announcements at D23 regarding the parks in Orlando. They might have mentioned something about a little film franchise titled Star Wars. But, that’s for another post…
