Florida is a veritable sportsperson's paradise. The warm summers and mild winters make Florida an ideal state for boating, camping, diving, snorkeling, fishing, jet skiing, golfing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, surfing, skiing, beach combing, swimming, parasailing or just plain sunning!
Generally the east coast has higher surf than the west coast. For activities involving surf such as surf boarding, body surfing and wave boarding the east coast is a better choice. Where calmer waters are preferred the west coast, panhandle and keys are a good choice.
The water along the west coast of Florida is warmer than that of the Atlantic coast. Here the water remains at a comfortable swimming temperature longer into the fall and winter. Excellent snorkeling and diving can be found in the keys. The water clarity and color rivals that of many Caribbean islands. The sea life is abundant and beautiful.
Florida has some of the best backwater fishing in the state. For the uninitiated, backwater fishing, or backcountry fishing, is angling in the extensive network of bays, mangrove islands and tidal creeks that permeate the region. There are thousands of miles of shoreline, countless oyster bars and acres of seagrass beds that attract an abundance of salt water fish.
Roaming these waters are four of the state's most sought after gamefish, the snook, redfish, spotted seatrout, and tarpon. Thousands of anglers come to southwest Florida each year for the chance at a grand slam, catching one individual of each species in one day.
With over 12,000 miles of streams and rivers, and 3 million acres of freshwater lakes, it's no wonder that fishing has always been a popular outdoor sport in Florida. It's been boasted that there are over 250 different species of freshwater fish in our our Florida waters.
Golfing is very popular in Florida. There are more golf courses in Florida than in any other state. It is estimated that there are more than 1,200 public, private and semiprivate courses in Florida. In some areas more than a dozen courses are within a short driving distance. Palm Beach County has more golf courses than any other county in the country.
